Lowering Your Water Bill This Summer

In most households, the water bill always increases over the summer season. Why? Because everyone does more laundry, waters the lawn, and take longer showers to cool down. This causes a spike in the water bill, which can often make people anxious. However, not all hope is lost. We are offering tips to lower your water bill this summer. Keep reading and you’ll save money and help protect the environment at the same time!

Switch to a dishwasher

Using a dishwasher instead of washing up by hand can save you a considerable amount of water. This is particularly true if your dishwasher is high-efficiency or ecological. This is also a great excuse to avoid hours in front of the sink every week. On top of this, before you load the dishwasher, try to avoid rinsing off your crockery. This is a huge waste of water, so just let the dishwasher do the job!

Stop running your tap

One of the most significant wastes of water is running the tap. People run their taps for a variety of reasons, usually to get their water to the right temperature. Yet, there are so many different options to avoid wasting so much water! To get a cold glass of water, simply use ice. If you need hot water, just boil the water in your kettle. These steps may take a little more effort, but they will make a huge difference in your bill at the end of the season. Additionally, if you have a leaky tap, it’s important to get it fixed immediately. Small leaks end up wasting gallons of water over time!

Take 5-minute showers.

It’s time to get strict with the length of time of your showers. 5-minutes are the suggested amount to save gallons of water each day. Most people have longer showers in the summer to cool down at the end of a hot day. However, 5-minutes are plenty of time to enjoy the cooling effects of a shower. Put in a waterproof timer into the shower to keep yourself strict with the time limit. If you have kids, try making it into a fun game. For instance, whoever has a 5-minute shower every day of the week wins a prize. If you add a little competitiveness into this rule, you’ll save on money without even realizing. On top of this consider changing your showerhead to an ecological low-flow one. Trust us it’s a game changer when it comes to saving water!

Wash with cold water.

Laundry is one of the most significant drains on water usage during summer. This is especially stressful for large families because each member will go through at least one set of clothing each day. Not to mention extra items such as bathing suits, leisurewear, and summer pajamas. Only put to wash when you have a full load of clothes. Additionally, washing in cold temperature will alleviate the energy and water usage. If you have an old washing machine, consider updating to a new model, financially you will save money long term for a one-time cost. Usually, modern machines use less water per wash.
