5 Most Common Summer Plumbing Problems

Winter is the time of year most commonly associated with plumbing problems. Cold temperatures can freeze and shatter pipes, causing serious underground leaks that require a total overhaul of the plumbing system. NOT FUN!
But did you know that the warmer months can also cause issues with the plumbing systems? Here are the five most common summer plumbing problems you’re likely to encounter:

1. Sewage line backups/clogs — During the spring and summer rain showers, it’s likely that the rainwater soaks into the ground and seeps into the sewage system via cracks in the pipes and drains. The water brings soil and sediment with it, increasing the risk of sewage line clogs and back-ups. Worse still, tree roots may crack the pipes, causing problems with drainage.

2. Clogged toilets — With your kids at home all summer long, the toilet is going to be getting a lot more use throughout the day. The more a toilet is used, the more likely it is to get clogged. If you don’t teach your kids to avoid flushing toilet paper, food, and toys down the toilet, you’re all but guaranteed to get a clog. Thankfully, clogged toilets are one of the easier plumbing problems to deal with! It’s only when the clog gets very bad that you’ll need to call in a professional.

3. Clogged or damaged garbage disposal unit — Summer is a time for backyard barbecues, pizza parties, and other food-related events. Unless you’re very careful with the food you throw down your sink, you could damage or cause a clog in your garbage disposal unit. Too-hard produce, animal bones, and melon rinds can all damage the unit, and oils and fats can cause clogs. Make sure to learn exactly what type of foods your garbage disposal unit can handle!

4. Sprinkler problems — Your lawn sprinklers are going to see a lot of use this summer, as you need to water your property a lot to see that nice green grass. If you didn’t inspect and clean the sprinkler heads at the beginning of the year, there’s a chance they can get clogged and stop working. Or, you may accidentally run over them in your lawn mower if you’re not careful.

5. Washing machine issues — You go through a lot more clothing during the summer time, so you’ll be doing more loads of laundry every week. The more you wash, the more stress you put on your washing machine. Problems are all but guaranteed to arise, forcing you to call in a professional to get your machine back in working order.
Yes, summer time comes with many plumbing problems of its own. That’s why it’s so important that you have a plumber you can trust, and who is available any time you need quick plumbing fixes or solutions around your home!
